Agia Pelagia (Dimos Gaziou) is a pretty coastal resort, built on a sloping hill, 20km northwest of Heraklion with its own boulevard and shops. It is named after the homonymous church ruins found to the west of Agia Pelagia. Its sheltered location provides this picturesque town with plenty of wonderful beaches. You can visit the beaches of Agia Pelagia, Psaromoura Beach, Kladissos Beach, Ligaria Beach and Mononaftis Bay. The village is built on top of an ancient Minoan city with pottery, ceramics, urns, coins and other artifacts to be seen in several of Crete's museums.
In high season, the village is transformed from a quiet seaside fisherman village to a busy tourist hub with shops, bars, restaurants and hotels opening up only in the summer months. Nearby attractions include the hillside village Rogdia with spectacular views across the bays and towns, the Evresi cave and excavation Kladistos with the remains of a university and post-Minoan graves from the 4th century BC. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular water activities, but you can also enjoy the pristine waters by water-ski, sailboat, canoe or kayak. It is a scenic village with beautiful bays, Cretan nature, friendly locals and fantastic views at the sea.
