Crete is the largest and most popular island in Greece. Its capital Heraklion or Iraklion has a modern harbor dominated by the remains of a Venetian fortress. You can visit the archeological Museum of Heraklion, wander around several Byzantine churches or take a trip to the Minoan palace Knossos. Scuba diving is available all around Crete; however some regions are more popular than others. The towns Agia Pelagia, Mali, Bali and Elounda all on the north shore of Crete, have attracted divers for years. They have been transformed from quiet traditional fishing villages into popular tourist dive resorts. You can dive the fantastic Messerschmitt Wreck or the caves of El Greco.

Party towns such as Malia and Khersonisos are all time favorites for students with excellent evening entertainment, bars, clubs and nightlife. Agia Pelagia is a pretty seaside town offering several sheltered beaches and serving as a perfect base to explore Crete. Highlights in Crete include the caves and cliffs at Matala, the leper colony Spinalonga and the picturesque village Chania with its intermixed architecture and cultural differences from Ottoman, Venetian and Arabic empires. Fit visitors that are interested in exploring Crete's beauty can walk the Samaria Gorge or climb Crete's highest mountain Mount Psiloritis. It is a fertile island with cliffs, gorges, dry plains and plenty of farm ground for olives, vine and oranges. Its warm oceanic waters are clean, nutrient rich and crystal clear offering divers excellent visibilities, plenty of marine life and simple coral coverage.
