Zakynthos, often referred to as Zante, is a nice island with steep cliffs and mountains in the west, fertile lands in the center and pretty beaches in the southeast. Its many golden white beaches and crystalline waters has attracted visitors for centuries and resulted in a thriving tourism industry. Highlights in Zakynthos town or Chora are Solomos Square with the statue of Dionysios Solomos which was a famous 19th century poet born on Zakynthos who wrote the national anthem of Greece, the Church of Agios Dionysios and the remains of a Venetian fortress. Besides Zakynthos Town you can also explore the small uninhabited island Marathonissi or visit Limni Keriou (Keri), a small idyllic village on Zakynthos' most southern point with panoramas across the Ionian Sea. Other sights are the traditional town Maherado and the beaches in Porto Limnionas, Porto Zoro and Porto Vromi.
Highlights in the area are the magical Blue Caves in the north near Cape Skinari. A daytrip to Shipwreck Bay (Navagio Beach or Smugglers Cove) near Anafontria is very popular for its blue waters and steep cliffs. It is named after a wreck that sank in 1983 and transported illegal cigarettes, nowadays located on the beach and covered in sand. The National Marine Park of Zakynthos in the southwest is famous for its inhabitants, the endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) which are particularly found in the Bay of Kalamaki. Since this island has a rough underwater landscape, divers are treated with a plethora of caves, caverns, arches and swimthroughs. When lucky, you can observe some of its sea turtles (June-July) or the rare seal Monacus-Monacus. It is diving in rich waters with plenty of coral and marine life.
