Maybe one of the most popular islands of Greece, Corfu or Kerkyra (Corcyra) is with its fantastic beaches, excellent tourist facilities and green interior a place to behold. The west is rocky with steep cliffs, the north is mountainous facing Albania and beachers will love the stunning protected white beaches in the east. Its olive groves, cypresses trees and green meadows of flowers and blossom have given it its nickname Emerald Isle. Places to see in Corfu Town are the elegant Saint Spiridon's Church and the Old Fort (Palaio Frourio) facing the Liston Esplanade. Corfu's main Archaeological Museum holds artifacts such as pottery and sculptures found at excavations throughout Corfu. Most nightlife, discotheques and bars are located here as well and serve the needs of thousands of young partiers. At only ten minutes away you can find quiet traditional villages with very friendly slow pace locals.
The beautiful gardens and vistas of Achillion Palace in Gastouri is known as it was the residence of princess Sissy from Austria. Wandering around here makes you understand why it was chosen as a place to relax. The Bay of Kanoni, just south of Corfu Town, is famous for Pontikonisi or Mouse Island and Vlacherna with its white beach and single cypress tree. Besides popular water activities such as diving, swimming and snorkeling, you can also play some golf at the magnificent greens of Penncross Bent or take an excursion to Aqualand Corfu with its many water slides. You can also drive the winding roads of Corfu's mountainous hinterland and visit the deserted village Perithia or walk towards Mount Pantokrator. Famous spots around the island include the coves and sailboats of Paleokastritsa and the beautiful beaches of Sidari Beach, Agios Gordios and Glyfada Beach. Its many pretty bays, pristine beaches and clear warm waters are a haven for marine life perfect for basic snorkeling and scuba diving.
