Kefalonia or Cefalonia is the largest island within the Ionian Island group, bordered by Lefkada and Zakynthos. Some say that it is named after the mythological creature Cephalus who was the 'head' or father of a great family including Odysseus. Others say it is named after its shape as its name literally means island with a head. Kefalonia is also one of the most popular places in Greece with tourist facilities such as resorts, restaurants and excellent bars common in the capital Argostoli and other villages such as Fiscardo, Lassi, Skala, Lixouri, Poros and Sami. There are also picturesque remote villages with fantastic white beaches and green bluish waters with Myrtos Beach famous around the world.

The capital Argostoli is a small town on the south west of Kefalonia. There is a national park perfect for hiking and home to the 1628 meter high Mount Ainos. The spacious Drogarati Cave offers stalagmites and stalactites the size of small towers. Mellisani Underground Lake is a small turquoise lake entered by boat through Mellisani Cave, especially impressive when sunrays fill this outside open hole. Fiskardo and Assos are two pretty towns in the north with dramatic cliff like scenery and quiet white golden beaches. In the south you can find villages such as Lourdas and Skala with Kaminia Beach and its protected population of loggerhead turtles. Other highlights are the monastery Haghia Panagia, the beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos and several old mansions. It is one of Greece finest holiday destinations, perfect to relax, with friendly people and some great activities and sights to behold.
