The area of Plakias lies in the south coast of Rethymnon prefecture and it stretches from the beaches of Rodakino in the west, to the famous Preveli beach in the east. It includes relaxing sandy beaches as well as dramatic rocky sceneries and offers great opportunities to dive and enjoy the rich sea life of the Libyan sea.

It is one of the most quiet and less packed touristic areas of the island of Crete, however offering good accommodation and touristic infrastructure. It is embraced by a mountainous area in its north, separating it from the inland and the north coast. These mountains are a great place for trekking and are literally torn by amazing gorges that offer passage to the northern part of Crete, including the most impressive Kourtaliotiko gorge and Kotsifou gorge. The main residential location is the small town of Plakias, that offers the most lively places to stay, eat and go out. However, the greater area is full of small and large hotels, apartments and villas for rent, offering a wide range of accommodation and recreational choices.
